During the height of the Coronavirus pandemic, I created The Medway Local to make it easier for people to discover and celebrate all the great things independent Medway businesses had to offer and encourage more people to shop locally. Local businesses were doing everything they could to adapt and survive, but it wasn’t always easy to find out what they were doing, or how to support them.

Fast forward to 2025 and the world is facing fresh financial uncertainty. Choosing to shop locally is more important than ever. Every pound spent at a local business supports jobs, fuels creativity, and helps to keep our high streets unique. That’s why The Medway Local is getting a long overdue refresh. Keep an eye on the site for some great new businesses, and you can follow us on Instagram to see the latest finds.

Since launching the project, I’ve discovered so many inspiring small businesses and found even more reasons to be proud of where I live. I hope the site helps other Medway locals do the same!

Tips on getting featured

We’ve had such a positive response to the site and we receive lots of requests from businesses asking to be featured. The Medway Local is a side project so we’re updating the site as often as we can. There are a few things we’re looking for that will increase your chances of being added to the shopping guide.

A unique offering
We’re especially looking for products and experiences that demonstrate the variety of great things available locally. If you’re offering something we haven’t seen much of, or there’s a unique story behind what you do, that’s a huge plus.

Good visuals
We want to make the site engaging and help people discover great, unique gift ideas. You don’t have to be a professional photographer but clear, well-lit photos make it much easier for us to share your business.

Based in Medway
There are some great sites and social accounts sharing businesses across Kent. We’ve decided to keep things super local and highlight businesses and shops that are right on our doorstep.

Follow and tag us on Instagram
We share a lot of businesses on our Instagram stories and we often spot potential features via social media. Tag us @themedwaylocal or use the hashtag #themedwaylocal so we can see what you’re up to. If we spot something shareable, we’ll be sure to feature you.
