About Us

The Coronavirus pandemic has not only changed the way we shop, it’s given us an even greater appreciation for our high streets and local community. Businesses have had a tough year. Some have struggled to survive and many people have lost work or been furloughed. But we’ve also seen an incredible resilience.

High street shops have adapted and changed, launching new products, embracing online shopping and offering click and collect. Creative people are launching new online businesses. Despite a tough year, there are a lot of exciting things happening in Medway.

During the second lockdown, I wanted to make it super easy for people to discover and celebrate all the great things independent Medway businesses have to offer and encourage more people to shop locally - especially during holidays.

I’ve discovered so many amazing independent businesses and gotten to know some of my favourites even better. I hope the site helps other Medway locals do the same!

Tips on Getting Featured

We’ve had such a positive response to the site and we’re getting lots of requests from businesses asking to be added. The Medway Local is a side project so we’re updating the list as often as we can. There are a few things we’re looking for that will increase your chances of being added to the shopping guide.

1. A unique gift idea. We want to make sure there’s a balance of different types of gift ideas so if you’re offering something unique this will increase your chances of being featured. We’re looking for physical gifts (more fun to open on Christmas morning!) but we’ll feature the occasional gift voucher if the gift idea is really unique or sought after.

2. An online shop or clear instructions on how to order online. The guide is designed to highlight online shopping options for those who may not be comfortable venturing out to the shops during the pandemic, and to support businesses who are trying to promote their online shops.

3. Good product photography. We want to make the site engaging and help people discover great, unique gift ideas. You don’t have to be a professional but clear, well-lit photos make it much easier for us to share your products.

4. Based in Medway. There are some great sites and social accounts sharing businesses across Kent. We’ve decided to keep things super local and highlight businesses and shops that are right on our doorstep.

5. Follow and tag us in your posts on Instagram. We’re sharing a lot of businesses and gift ideas in our Instagram stories. If we spot something shareable, we’ll be sure to feature you.
